In this article, you will learn how to make the game easier for yourself and more complicated for your opponents with smoke grenades on the most popular map of СS:GO – Mirage.

What is a Smoke?

Smoke is a grenade that creates an impenetrable cloud of smoke. It costs $300 and is available to both terrorists and counter-terrorists. Smoke can put out Molotov, but it doesn’t protect you from flash grenades. Even if a flash blows up behind smoke, the player will be blind. After recent updates, players can drop grenades, so you could ask your mate to do it. Read down below to find out how to use smoke on Mirage in CS:GO.

Positions on Mirage

Very often, in matchmaking, there are players from other countries. So, the CS:GO community chose the English variant names of points on Mirage. These designations of places (positions on the map) allow you to share information about your and opponents’ movement and conduct a full-fledged dialogue with English-speaking players.

How Smokes on Mirage Work?

Smoke is a universal grenade that can be used for different purposes. Usually, the attack side use smokes to block some spots on sites to make plant execution easier e.g. “jungle” and “stairs” on A site. The defense side smokes contact positions on the map where they assume their opponents are. Let’s take a closer look!

How to Use Smoke on Mirage?
To throw smoke, you have to get to a certain place on the map, aim at a specific point, and press throw. There are five different ways to throw the smoke:

• Stand + Throw
• Jump + Throw
• Walk (Shift) + Throw
• Run + Throw
• Duck (Ctrl) + Throw

Smokes on bombsite A for the Attack Side

To enter the A site, all players must know how to throw basic smokes on Mirage in CS:GO. For a successful attack on the A plant, you need to smoke three high-prioritized positions – “CT”, “Jungle”, and “Stairs”. All these smokes you can throw from “T spawn”. We also attached a video of A site smokes at the end of this section for your convenience.

To throw “CT” smoke, you have to stay here:

Aim as indicated in the screenshot below, and do jump + throw

After this smoke, your mates that will attack from the “Pit” can not fear the AWPer that could stay there. But don’t forget that the defensive player can jump on the “ticket box”.

“Jungle” smoke is a must-have for an attack on Mirage in CS:GO. It will help to save “palace” players from AWPer that usually plays “window” and also “pit” players that will enter the A site. Very effective in combination with “stairs” smoke.

To smoke “Jungle”, you need to jump up on “T roof”, find the last window in front of the “pit”, and stay as shown in the picture:

Place your crosshair between two of those peaks and just throw.

It also closes the view of the A site for the “Connector” and “Short” players.

“Stairs” smoke is pretty simple to throw. Find this spot on the map:

After the attack creates this smoke wall, defense players that protect the A site are cut off from allied fire support and become vulnerable to attackers.

Also, when attacking point A, we advise you to leave one player in the apartment on B. He will always be able to delay or even kill the defenders of B site. Speaking of the B site, let’s see what attack smokes are on this part of the map.

Smokes on bombsite B for the Attack Side

If you think B plant execution doesn’t require smokes, and you can just +w rush it (attack bombsite despite any obstacles), you are deeply mistaken. Of course, you can sometimes do the “rush B” tactic, but statistically, it would work only if your enemies are inexperienced or low-skilled.

There are four main smokes on the B plant:

The first one is “Kitchen window” smoke. Find this spot on the map:

Aim just as shown in the screenshot and press jump + throw:

This smoke сomplicates gameplay for the “Window” player and forces him to jump through the smoke and waste more time for rotation.

The most dangerous defense positions on B plant are “Edward” and “Short”. To smoke them, you need two smokes:

“Short” is smoked. Let’s move to the next one.
To throw smoke on the “Edward” stand, as shown in the screenshot:

Aim slightly to the left of that visor and throw:

The other nasty for position attackers is “Bench”. It works perfectly in combinations of two previous smokes because counter-terrorist players usually stay in crossfire positions, and these three smokes make it impossible.

“Bench” smoke is pretty easy to throw. Stand here:

After your team throws these smokes and starts rushing apps, don’t forget to use Molotov on “Van”.

Smokes on Middle for the Attack Side

“Middle” or “Mid” is an additional direction that is connected to two bombsites. Through it, attackers can create additional pressure on one or another plant. The key positions of the defensive players that you have to deal with are “Connector”, “Short\Catwalk\Ladder”, and “Window”. At the end of this title, we will also attach a video with all the mentioned smokes.

If your team decided to play “Mid” use this smoke to help them cross to “Mid boxes”.

Jump on this garbage bin:

Aim at the antenna branch as in the screenshot and simply throw:

Be ready for an aggressive “Underpass” push by a defense player. He can jump from “Window” and try to surprise attackers, especially on eco-rounds (all team players refuse to buy something to save money for the next round) or force-buys (last money buy SMG+Armour or Pistols+Armour).

When you cross to “Mid boxes” you can choose what positions you need to smoke. It depends on where the attack vector is directed to. If you play “Mid” solo or with one mate a good option is to smoke “Window”.

Stand in the right corner between the cart and boxes:

If your teammate has already smoked “Window”, you need to smoke “Ladder\Short” or “Connector”. If you plan to attack A, then smoke “Ladder\Short”.

If you want to attack B site, then use “Connector” smoke. Stand in the left corner between the cart and boxes:

Using this smoke, you can cross to the B site but beware of an enemy that can stay inside of the “Connector”.

Well, we have discussed the main smokes for the attacking side and their necessity. Now, it’s time to show you some defensive smokes on the Mirage map.

Smokes on Mirage for the Defense side

The defense’s main aim is to delay the enemy’s attack on the plant and turn the retake situation into their fortune. Coutner-Terrorists also use smoke to hide the planted bomb and try to make ninja defuse (bomb defusing when at least one terrorist is alive). They need to use their utility carefully and with exact timing. For example, if you don’t have money to buy an incendiary grenade, then use anti-rush smoke (smoke thrown on early timing to prevent a fast attack). The video with all smokes for the defense side at the end of the section.

Terrorists very often peek “Pit” in the early timing. Use this smoke to prevent it.

Attack players love to rush B plant through “apartments”. Learn the next smoke to stop them. Stand near this dumpster:

Don’t forget that smoke is not a wall, and attackers can rush through it.

If you are a “Short” player, the next smoke will help you to hold “Mid” and support your teammates.

Stand in front of that door:

Aim at the shadows’ top between those two bricks and press throw:

Now you can try to cross to the “Ladder” and fight versus “Chair”.

Defense players also use smoke to make a kill. It is called “one-way” smoke (smoke with a gap to look through it). Its main feature is that the player who drops this smoke becomes invisible or almost inconspicuous to others. For example, “Window One-Way” smoke:

We don’t recommend you use this smokes every round or after you were exposed. Also, if your opponents know the one-way smoke that you use, they can spam into the smoke or even prefire you!

Tip 1 – Binds

In a recent update, Valve added the possibility to take smoke using bind in the settings menu.

To bind the smoke button open Settings, then choose a tab called «Keyboard / Mouse» and scroll a bit down. You can also bind other grenades there.

There are some smokes that you can’t throw without a bind. We recommend you use bind for “jump+throw” to use smokes of this type with 100% accuracy.

• EliGE: bind «h» «+jumpthrow»
• ZywOo: bind «a» «+jump ; -attack ; -jump»

It is most likely impossible to perform something like this in ordinary matchmaking. But if you have a few friends or even a team, then you can try to replicate some attacks from the video. The main thing is to practice.

Tip 2 – Smoke Practicing

There are specific maps to practice smokes. In this article, we take all screenshots on the “Yprac Mirage Guide” map from Workshop. You can download it for free.

First, run CS:GO, press the play button, then in the top left corner, you will see the tab “visit workshop” click on it. Inside the in-game overlay, you will see the search line type the name of the map (e.g. “Yprac Mirage Guide”). Press on “+” and start your training.
